Case Study · Sunset Boulevard

How Sunset Boulevard went from 2% to almost 80% digital orders

Sunset Boulevard is the leading Danish-owned fast food chain in Denmark, with 45+ restaurants and an international expansion under way. Its web shop, app and in-restaurant kiosks run on FastFoodShop, the fast food mode of FoodShop, built by Sprinting Retail.

The Challenge

2%

Before FoodShop, Sunset Boulevard sold digitally through its own web shop and through take-away portals. That came to 2% of revenue.

98%

The other 98% of orders were taken by hand, at the till and at the drive-in.

Sunset chose Sprinting Retail for its experience in digital food sales and for short development cycles. In the words of the case:

“We are impatient by nature and want a short time from idea to launch.”

What Was Built, and in What Order

The plan had three phases. The pandemic changed the order.

  1. 1
    The plan

Kiosk, then app, then a new web shop

Self-service kiosks in the restaurants first, then an ordering app, then a replacement for the old web shop.

  2. 2
    Covid-19

The app went first, with curbside pickup

When Denmark locked down, the ordering app launched ahead of the kiosk. Guests could order and pay digitally and pick up at the car park. Sunset calls this service SunsetToGo.

  3. 3
    Kiosk pilot

Two restaurants, 60% on the first day

The kiosks were piloted in two restaurants. On the first day, 60% of the in-restaurant guests used them.

  4. 4
    Loyalty

    SunsetPLUS and SunsetPoint

A paid subscription with a discount on every order, alongside a free points programme. Both are sold and used inside the ordering shop.
